Cases for Hope

suitcaseAt TVBC, we try to teach our students to think about the needs of others and how they can be the hands and feet of Jesus by providing for those needs. To teach them this we try to show them needs that may not be right in front of their faces and provide meaningful opportunities for them to practice intentional giving. We hope, through the month of July, to provide for one such need.

Everyday children are removed from their homes and placed in the foster care system. Most times this happens suddenly and without time to carefully pack belongings. Children are picked up by a social worker and have to put their clothes and precious belongings in a garbage bag because there is not suitcase or duffle bag for them to take. Many times these kids move from home to home with nothing but a garbage bag full of stuff. (While working in group homes I saw this happen and know it to be absolutely true.) Can you imagine packing your belongings in a garbage bag? Or walking into a new home full of new faces carrying all you have in a garbage bag? It seems like a small thing but we pray that by providing a respectable suitcase or bag for these children it will provide a little more comfort in a traumatic time and give a little hope in what may seem like a hopeless situation.

cases for hope

Altar84 is an orphan care ministry that seeks to minister to vulnerable children everywhere. One of the many things they do is partner with churches to provide suitcases and duffle bags for social workers to take as they pick up children who are faced with packing their belongings and leaving the home they know.

Through the month of July we hope to provide as many suitcases as possible. We’re asking our students, parents, and the whole church to donate new or gently used suitcases or duffle bags to meet this important need. You can bring them to the church anytime and put them in the student room.

Meet the Hill family

Allow me to introduce you to a family that needs very little introduction at TVBC. Ben and Shelley Hill are the newest members to Student Ministry team and will be teaching the 7th-9th grade Sunday School class.

After several years of faithful ministry to our students, Dell and Leigh Ann Oswalt have decided to step down for a time. They will surely miss their class but were happy to see such a good couple as the Hills take the position. I will always be grateful for the blessing that the Oswalts have been to our Student Ministry at TVBC.

Both Ben and Shelley are pastors kids. Ben’s parents were church planting missionary’s in Montana and Shelley’s dad pastors a church in Clanton. They are both graduates of the University of Mobile where they met and decided to spend their lives serving God together. Ben is a Paint Specialist at Brose, an auto parts manufacturer, and Shelley is a busy mom of 4, Carlie, Colden, Cadie, and Carter.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to see the great things God is going to do through their ministry among our students. If you don’t know the Hills already, I’m sure they’d love for you to introduce yourself. Please be in prayer for them and students that they will be teaching each week.
